Print Production_ Pre Press Proofing:

I have decided that i should now apply what i have learnt from my research into commercial print now, i decided that i would speak to my peers about my design to see if there where any alterations that needed to take place. I carried this out by a pre press proof the definition of what that is is shown below.

Pre press proof:

An analogue or digital proof that gives an approximate of what the finished piece will look like
advantages
the production is in expensive, in particular the digital proofs
disadvantages
Colour is not as accurate as press proof as does not use actual inks

I decided to show a digital pre press version in the form of an issuu document that is displayed below, and a print based one although this was only a black and white print out, this would only be a representation of layout and order of the book itself. My peers where extremly helpful and picked up on a few things that could be altered, this is a very useful method and i can see why it is such a large part of commercial print within the industry sometimes it helps to have another set of eyes on your work.

Print based Pre Press Proof:
This is simply a digital print out that does not display the stock that would be used, inks that would be used or the binding method it is simply a proof in which to get feed back on my content and layout of the design,

Print Production: Design Development:

Moving on from my design development i am now moving onto the creation of my final design i am happy with my layout design and the diagrams i have created the next stage is once i have produced my editorial i must then look into the finishing and print techniques i will be experimenting with for the print production manual.

I have decided for this section of my editorial i will create sort of a swatch booklet for each of the paper types, This is just a mock up and the text is only place holder however this is just to show layout, The stock samples i have received from companies will be separated into all the different paper categories and will have a test design i have created to see how it react to digital print this will then allow me to look back at how the stock react and this will then inform me on whether i have made the correct stock choice. The tester will look at how the stock reacts to the colours of CMYK how readable and legible the letter forms are reproduced at 12pt 10pt 9pt.

Moving on with my development as you can see i have now put both elements into combination, i feel that the aesthetic of the simplified diagrams run alongside the clean modernist layout giving the layout  a strong hierarchy and in my opinion a clean modern aesthetic.

Development of Diagrams for editorial_

I decided that as i have chosen to go with a clean modernist layout, i should then in turn also reflect this within the diagrams that will making up the content of the print production manual i have looked at existing diagrams for the print process then simplified them to make the process clear to me i feel this will work well in combination with the modernist layout however to make sure the design does not come across as boring i could possibly introduce a spot colour to the designs to make them stand out as well as giving me an opportunity to experiment with this.

Development and idea generation for layout:

After looking into a wide range of visual research into editorial design i was heavily inspired by the modernist style of design and i feel that this is the most effective design choice to go with in my opinion, this is due to the mass information that the manual is going to contain. It made sense to me to follow this route in maximising reading ease i have also tried to combat this by stripping the content of my book down again to maximise the ease and usability of my editorial. I have decided to develop the layout that is left side top right, I felt that this design was the cleanest and used a perfect amount of white space not over powering the viewer, the next stage of my design development it digitalise this layout.

As you can see i have also looked into ideas for the front cover of my book, although many people say do not judge a book by its cover, i still feel this has a huge part to play with attracting the viewer i know to me a product is all about feel. I have decided that i want the cover of my book to reflect the content I aim to experiment with de bossing on this cover no ing just pure de boss i feel this will create a beautiful feel to the product as well as giving me a greater understanding of print production as i have not yet done any de bossing.

Print production Crit:

Design Direction Boards:

During this crit we presented our work to our peers in groups of 8, this was basically just to give them some background information on what i am aiming to create. This seemed to go down well and the group seemed to understand what i am aiming to produce:

After this we then went onto generating questions that we wanted to receive feedback on that would in turn influence my practice:

- Stock choice? are the stocks i have selected, effective? or are there any other samples more effective?
- Is simplicity the most effective route to go down?
- Is summarising my research going to be effective or will this be too vague?
- Isit clear what i am wanting to achieve?

We then paired off and went onto crit our peers work: My feedback is shown below: I have summarised all my feedback -

Strengths:
Really strong stock considerations - research seems to have benefited you
Design boards show great direction, if your designs run along with inspiring work it will look sweet
Go with the two stocks i have selected as they reflect simplicity
Simple works - Ikea style works with the simple modernist style
Simple package is functional and protects the stock and prevents creasing
Summarise content to match the style
Strong visual aesthetic - working very well as this would display the content

Areas of Improvement:
Try experimenting with other stocks, for the content pages as this stock chosen creases fairly easily
Summarise content but still make the content make sense so it is understandable
This information could be displayed in illustrations and vectors
Stock and Colour before Print processes
Order you would use them in print
Start Designing to get a feel

Consideration:
Simplicity is good, but make sure there is enough info to convey the information
Choose the information that i want but make sure someone checks this
Look at different stocks on a variety of pages - Show the different stocks:

Live Briefs: Notes From Briefing:

This brief allows us to focus on our individual practice: I have began by reading through the brief, and getting a an idea of how this will fit in within my practice, i feel this brief will not only allow me to get my name out into the industry but will also allow me to work on multiple briefs at one time improving my management skills.

I have selected Briefs that i feel would benefit my personal practice and improve my skills as a designer: The briefs are from
