Design Principles: What is a line:

BRIEF:
What is the problem you intend to solve:
I am aiming to solve problems with communication when travelling i know from past experience that communicating with locals abroad is very difficult. I realise that i will not be able fully solve this problems there is no chance i will be able to teach the viewer how to speak a whole new language.

WHO NEEDS TO KNOW:
Aimed at people who travel frequently or plan to at some point in life.

WHAT DO THEY NEED TO KNOW?
Basically the publication will contain lines speech, in the form of a range of short phrase's or question's specific to the select country. I will select the top 10 travel destinations then research into what languages are common in the area. The phrases and questions contained in the book will be specific to the area and will also contain important questions such as. where is the hospital? where are the toilets etc. These questions will be repeated throughout the booklet.

WHAT WILL THEY RESPOND TO?
The design will be both type based and image based i aim to combine the two in a way that is clean cut and professional. The questions and phrases will be displayed initially in english then below this the translation in the specific language therefore solving some part of the communication barrier.

The imagery will be mainly aimed at the traveling aspect of the design rather that the lines of speech side. This will again be a combination of type and image where phrases specific to the select country will be displayed along with supporting images.

WHAT RESEARCH IS REQUIRED:

From here we went on to select 5 from each list and produce a logic this was to be based on previous design principle sessions for example photography, Anatomy of type, Hierarchy, Type & Grid etc.

Logic:
  • Info graphics > Gammon > Publication - Showing the percentage of salt in gammon ect other health related facts
  • Speech > Traveling > Book/Publication - Speech from all over the world, Travellers guide:
  • Maps > Summer > Photography - Photographs of summer destinations forming a map.
  • Receipt > Beer > Publication - Showing the price people are paying for beer and where it comes from.
