ISTD_ Final Hand In Boards_

Print and Web: Web Design Development_

In terms of the web design i have decided to give it a go in  DreamWeaver as i knew i would not finish the design as time is limited. I used an existing template to lay out the grid format in which the  content would be place i have used techniques i have found in my web design module where the placement of similar colours are used to give the design an overall calming feel and to make sure the design is not overpowering.

I have also introduced the mock up of how the link would open the image itself would then link you directly to a light box which is used to represent your show which would then be full screened.

Design For Print: Design in Context_

Design In Context_

The images below show the Print production manual in context, this simply displays the overall size of the publication. The publication is the perfect size to be transported in a back pack or portfolio, this means in my case the manual can be taken too and from college as i please.

ISTD: Stock Selection_

In terms of getting the print based products printed i decided that as i cannot get the design professionally printed i would simply just print the design as a mock up, I have selected two fedrigoni papers that would have been used for the production of my print based design.  I have selected a lower gsm white paper that would have been used for the letterheads and for the more sturdy envelopes a thicker gsm textured paper that i believe has a real feel of quality.

This is the only real specialist aspect of the print based aspects because of the nature of the brief in my opinion i could have gone about embossing the letterheads ect  and foiling but in terms of my brands identity i did not feel this was relevant. The products would be mass produced and so i felt that the fact there was no application of specialist finishes was applicable to my brief.

Design for Print: Stock Experimentation_

As part of my print production manual i have included a swatch style aspect to my publication where all the stocks have been separated into different finishes for example coated, uncoated ect... I then created a tester as shown below which will be then printed onto all of the stock samples as a reference for me to see how cmyk is reproduced on the stock and also how typographic elements react on the stock when printed at different sizes.

The image below shows how i have incorporated the colour scheme throughout the design.
and how the branding has been spread along all of the products. I feel that as this is my first attempt i have done rather well however i found some aspects difficult for example. Throughout my practice i have never really enjoyed working with a lot of colour and i have kept the colour selection down to around 1 or 2, it was very difficult for me to work with 3 colours however i feel i have executed a design that works effectively.

ISTD_ Web Design and digital aspects of The Brand

The images below show how i have developed my design ideas from the drawing board and then moved onto applying to illustrator. the design sheet below shows a range of different ideas for my web design layout. I have made sure to stick to a simplistic grid that will display the content of my design. The background for my web design will be all white i feel this will create a great contrast between the logo and most of all will direct the focus to the content of the design rather than the background.

This design sheet is showing how i have experimented with a range of different layouts and ideas, i will be moving this on to digitalise some ideas and will manipulate the ideas as i go within illustrator.

Digitalised mock ups, the mock ups i have created below are simply displaying how my filter idea works, as you can see a genre/colour is selected and then only the content wanted is displayed creating a much more user friendly design.

As you can see below and to the left, i have experimented with the placement and backgrounds of the design however i feel it is simply over powering and overcomplicating the design as a whole and i feel it should be left simple as this can only improve the usability of the design. Aswell as communicating the content rather than its fancy aesthetic.

Image again showing how i have mocked up the advert idea i feel this is clear i am gutted i didnt get round to making these adverts as i feel they could have been very effective in conveying the aims of the channel.

Design for Web: Final Design_

The images below display the pages of my final web design, although i was unable to produce the interactive aspect of my web design due to my skill level within dreamweaver. I believe the use of different background images is effective in it communicates the general content of the page instantly. I feel the navigation is effective in the way it can be used as an interactive element or it can be simply navigated as shown at the top of every page.

You can also see how i have applied a low opacity background on the far left column this was used to ensure that all the typographic elements maintain a high level of readability.

In terms of colour scheme I feel that keeping the design black and white not only relates directly to space exploration but also gives the design a minimalist aesthetic that I feel works well as a reflection of space.

Print and Web: Logo and Brand Development_

The logo design the name was originated around the focus on highest quality_ and as the tv channel is something you all watch it made sense to go along with 2020 as this was a clear representative of high quality vision.

The dots originated from looking into filming and the use of cameras within film, i looked at the effects that are created when a camera focuses in on a specific object and dots are created as the lense focuses in.

And the colours used do not only represent the audience but are also used to represent a specific genre of the chanel for example

The image bowl shows how i began to mock up my print based branding, as i have not decided on a final design as of yet i decided that i would experiment in a test colour. I have decided that after looking at a range of existing branding for similar companies i would be producing

_ Letterheads
_ Envelopes
_ Business cards
_Posters

The images below are showing my initial ideas when it came down to the advertisement of my channel i have decided that i would keep it simple as this is the theme of my design direction. My web and tv ads would basically be a famous clip that is well know by everyone all in black in white. Then as the clip reaches its peak the logo comes through on top of the clip and a link to channel is presented.

I have also come up with an innovative design idea, in terms of placing the design in context in the city where the majority of my audience would be. This idea is mocked up belwo where the same clips that would be used for the digital ads are projected onto building i feel that this would be effective as it would create a real eye catching feature and would be something they would have never seen before, as well as being a low costing project.

As you can see below i went through some developmental work when it came to the decision of what logo to choose, I had to organise another crit in terms of my logo design and asked my peers which colour scheme was most effective the group all decided on one as the one directly below reflected nature. The design at the bottom is my selected design as i feel this works most effectively in reflecting the ethics and the content of the channel as well as having a large amount of contrast with white which will be used as the background throughout my designs.

Print Production manual: Final Design Issuu_

Final Design_

my final design has not been printed due to finance, however the print finishes and techniques have been shown, the final design is displayed below in Pdf format on Issuu:

Print Production Manual: Print Finishes and Print Techniques

I have have made my decision set on what print finishes i want to use for a long time and i have finally got around to experimenting with this. Due to finance i will not be able to get the print production manual commercially printed, however i wanted to produce some print techniques to get an idea of what finish would have been achievable.

My first experimentation was with De bossing this is the one i have been wanting to experiment with for a long time as i feel the finish that is achieved is very luxurious and really has a classy feel to it, this is what would have been used on the front cover of my print production manual. After carrying out my extensive research into print finishes i learnt that this is achieved by using a copper plate that has the design engraved into it, however i again did not have the funds to purchase a copper plate so i decided to experiment with making it out of MDF. I knew that obviously in the long run the quality of the print would deteriorate because of the condition of the plate which would get worse after every print. However i felt this would work perfectly for a few experimentations.

I carried out these Print experiments on a range of different stocks, coated, un coated, textured ect. i did this to again gain a greater understanding of what stocks produce the most effective results, i have learnt from this that the stock that would take the greatest emboss was a thick pulp paper that was un textured and was 300gsm, this is very beneficial for me in later projects.

Below shows the different stocks i have experimented with,  as you can see the two stocks to the right where most effective with the white stock being un textured mean allowing the emboss to be slightly more crisp to the black textured stock.

The next experimentation was with screen print, the reason for this was simply to display how aspects of colour would be introduced throughout my editorial, The use of screen print was just to display the use of a spot colour that i obviously could not achieve using the digital printers at college, I love the vibrancy that spot colours achieve and feel this gives the design an extra eye catching finish as well as a real sense of high quality.  From my research i have found that using spot colours can be very pricey however, as this is a one of product and would have a very long life span i feel that the use of spot colour would be applicable to this production.

As You can see i have again experimented on a range of different stocks, from crits and asking my peers i selected 3 stock samples that i would use for the leaves of my print production manual i decided it would be beneficial to see how the print looked once applied to these 3 stocks, I found that the textured paper to the left came out with the most effective print and overall was my favourite of the 3,  however for me to us this stock it would have to be lower gsm than the one used, the textured  paper however would give a very high quality finish and feel to the manual.

The glossy paper that was selected has a beautiful feel however i felt that to much light was reflected of the surface and for that reason i decided against this stock.

The images below are only of my pre press print but i am simply using this to explain that the binding method that would have been used for my design would have been perfect bound the reason for this being that perfect binding has a long life span and would make sure that the print manual could handle a fair amount of wear. The perfect binding method also gives an editorial a real sense of quality when being held by the reader.

Inside the stock section of my Print production manual featured a swatch book style layout_ in thins section where pages that where separated into different stock sections for example coated papers and un coated_ I have then produced a tester that is printed onto each of the stock using digital print techniques. These swatch samples would then be stuck into the book as a constant reference to me on the subject of how different stocks react to cymk printing and also how typographic elements react at different sizes. The tests are shown below_
